Intramed nails

Intramed splints are made of implant steel or titanium and are available in different lengths and diameters. The atraumatic splint tip is rounded in a runner shape, which allows better sliding when stepping on the inner side of the cortex. In addition, the laterally flattened splint tip aids anchorage in cancellous bone.

To identify the direction of the splint tip, the end of the splint is provided with a surface to indicate this.
Due to the small number of splint lengths, it may be necessary to shorten the splints. However, the interface should be fitted with a protective cap to protect the soft tissues from irritation. The Digimed splints are not countersunk into bone.

The rationale for intramedullary splinting is based on an apparent contradiction. Fixation of the medullary canal with resilient nails is on the one hand elastic, but on the other hand should provide sufficient stability for early mobilization. Shear forces, which negatively influence fracture healing, are largely converted into compressive and tensile forces. Targeted early loading increases these axial forces, thus stimulating new bone formation.
